Newborn Follow-up Clinics

The Newborn Follow-up Clinics provide management of babies who have had medical problems in the newborn period. There is a focus on surveillance, with referral to other community services as appropriate.

Specialities

  • Newborn medicine

  • Developmental follow up

Clinical inclusion

Infants who are at risk of problems related to neonatal issues (for example, prematurity, birth asphyxia)

Frequency

At least one clinic per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Estimated wait

Most infants referred from within the hospital are seen six to eight weeks after discharge, or earlier if required.

Referral

If general practitioners or maternal child health nurses wish to refer a baby for neonatal review, they should contact the on-call neonatal consultant via Main Reception to discuss the referral. This is a bulk-billed Medicare Clinic so Medicare card details will need to be provided.

Appointment

An acknowledgement letter will be sent directly to the patient and the GP will be notified. The patient will then receive a letter with the appointment details. Please provide a mobile phone contact number for the family so that a text reminder can be sent to the patient.
