Childbirth Education

The Women’s provides Childbirth Education programs for all pregnant women and their partners or support people, who have booked to give birth at the hospital. 

Women and their partner or support people are asked to check the Childbirth Education information in our patients & visitors section.

Programs include:

  • Fundamental classes in Childbirth Education

  • Preparing for pregnancy

  • Specialised sessions

  • Non-English speaking sessions

The programs are designed to inform women and increase their confidence about what to expect during pregnancy, labour, birth, breastfeeding and the early weeks following the birth of their baby.


  • Childbirth education for multiple pregnancies

  • Early pregnancy program

  • Talking dads (men only) program

  • Individual consultations for women with complex needs

  • Individual consultations for women who speak a language other than English, Chinese or Vietnamese (Parkville only)

  • Childbirth education programs in Chinese and Vietnamese (Parkville only)

  • Community based Childbirth education

  • Hospital tours (Parkville only)

Clinical inclusion

  • Patients who are booked to birth at the Women’s

  • Patients whose infant is in the Newborn Intensive Care unit (NICU) in Parkville

A fee applies to this service. 

Clinical exclusion

Patients who are not booked to birth at the Women’s


  • Seven days a week during the day and in the evening.

Pre-referral guidelines

Women must be booked to birth/have birthed at the Women’s or have a child in NICU to utilise this service.


An acknowledgement letter will be sent directly to the patient and the GP will be notified. The patient will then receive a letter with the appointment details.
