Neonatal care

As experts in complex and high-risk pregnancies in Victoria, we care for more than 1,700 premature and unwell babies every year.

The Women’s has one of Australia’s largest specialist neonatal services. Our intensive care and special care nurseries provide comprehensive care for unwell and/or premature babies.

We provide:

  • Care for unwell and/or premature babies
  • Arrange the transfer of babies to a hospital closer to their home, when they no longer require our tertiary level care
  • One of our specialist neonatologists can attend antenatal consultation, and birth, for women who have specific risk factors (for example, twin pregnancies)
  • Assessment of babies in the hospital’s general postnatal wards
  • Neonatal ultrasound (medical referral required)
  • Follow-up clinics after the birth – in particular for babies who are born prematurely

We predominantly care for babies born at the Women’s. We also care for unwell babies who have been transferred from other hospitals by the Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval Service (PIPER).

We have an internationally recognised research program assessing many neonatal problems and studying long term outcomes. We also conduct extensive postgraduate training programs for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
