At the Women’s, our focus is first and foremost on our people. Over 50 per cent of our workforce are nurses and/or midwives, and we prioritise offering flexibility, development opportunities and wellbeing support.

Why choose nursing or midwifery at the Women's?

Our flexibility

We value and promote the importance of work-life balance and work with you to provide flexible options tailored to your circumstances.

You can access both full and part-time career opportunities. Or if you’re interested in a casual role, you can enjoy innovative options through the Women's Bank. For further information about becoming a casual employee through the Women's Bank, email HR.enquiries@thewomens.org.au

Our career pathways

We provide unique growth opportunities in women’s and newborn health in a supportive and respectful environment. We also offer special programs for nurses and midwives in their late career, to step away from the bedside and share their knowledge through mentoring, quality improvement and other projects.

Our culture and benefits

You’ll love our culture - the Women’s was recently ranked as one of the top two metro Melbourne health services for workplace culture, according to our staff via the Victorian People Matter Survey.

As a part of our team, you’ll access plenty of staff benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing. Find out more about our staff benefits.

You’ll work to your full scope of practice and access advanced practice pathways. If you’re looking to be a specialist in newborn and/or women’s health, the Women’s is the place to be! Our specialties include:

  • sexual and reproductive health
  • neonatal care
  • maternity services
  • public fertility services
  • women’s health services
  • women’s emergency care.

Our ethos

With a spirit of innovation and being at the forefront of research, we provide high-quality, evidence-based and person-centred healthcare that is safe, effective and supportive of all women and babies.

We are committed to using the social model of health because we know that social and environmental factors, and not just medical concerns, impact a woman’s health and wellbeing. This means our nurses and midwives are part of multidisciplinary teams that actively encourage the empowerment of women and their right to make informed decisions about their health.

Nancy, Clinical Nurse Specialist – Neonatal
"The Women’s is more than just a workplace; it’s a diverse and supportive community. Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), caring for Victoria's sickest and most vulnerable babies is incredibly rewarding. We provide specialised care that makes a difference. The complexity of NICU keeps me constantly learning with plenty of opportunity for career growth and development."

But it’s more than that; our team in Theatre is unique.

We all support each other and lift each other up. We really care, because we all know that what we do really matters."

Caprice, Clinical Midwife Educator – Maternity Services Education Program

"I love working as part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary team. I get immense professional satisfaction from providing maternity education to clinicians in Victoria. I feel privileged to work with a variety of clinicians and service providers.
